YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE…

Experiences teach you everything, now I know it. I never thought that I will be writing about it, but now I have to. This article is not about any technical topic or current affair etc., it is about a real life experience which I wanted to share with everyone that happened with me yesterday.

We all have one thing which is very close to our heart and we can’t even think of losing it. I am not talking about persons here, I am talking about your day to day commodities or your favorite photograph or any of your favorite things. We get attached to some of these things not because they look good or they are costly but because they are with you for a long period of time. The moment you start thinking about, what if something happens to them, what if you won’t be able to see it again tomorrow, what if that thing is not there where you kept it last time??? These “WHAT IFS” sounds like nightmares for all those who are attached to something in their lives.

This something in my life is my ‘SMARTPHONE’, not only mine, I read somewhere that in a recent study it was revealed that more than 70% of people panicked when they misplaced their phones. Similar incident happened with me on the eve of 1st July, as I went to meet my buddies Devendra and Pratik along with my friend Venkatesh to their hostel at about 5:30 p.m on my bike. We planned to play cards and after around 2.5 hours, Venky and I were on our way to home. Venky told me that he wanted to buy some stuff so he will get off at the traffic signal and will meet me on the other side of the road, even I had to go to the petrol pump so I told him to meet me near the bus stand. As petrol pump was not so crowded, I was free within 5–6 minutes and now I was at the bus stand waiting for my friend at about 8:15 p.m. After around 4–5 minutes, I thought of calling him and asking whether I should come and pick him if he went too far, but now here is the twist in the story.

The moment I start looking for my phone, it was nowhere to be found. I became completely terrified as I was using it in the hostel and I remember keeping it back in my pocket. Then where did it go??? Whether I dropped it on our way from hostel to this point? Did I dropped it at petrol pump? Whether Venky is having my phone and he is playing a trick on me? All kinds of possible thoughts started emerging into my mind and even there was no sight of Venky. Then I thought of going back to the hostel to check whether I kept it there and by chance forgot to take it back, then what about Venky who would be waiting for me here? I had to do something, so I planned to go back and after reaching hostel, call Venky from my friend’s phone and tell him to go home as I would be late because of my phone. That 10 minute ride from bus stand to the hostel was full of prayers, consequences, causes etc, and also about my mother who would be worrying about me as it was already late. Finally I reached hostel and checked exactly the same point where I was sitting, but guess what, it was not there. My worst nightmare became reality, I was using Micromax Canvas A110 Q, I was using it from 2013 and it was not a phone with very high specifications but it was close to my heart. I started thinking about all my photos, videos, memories in that phone but now damage was done.

I told my friends to give me a call and give it a last try, but this arrow too didn’t hit the target. It appeared that mobile phone was either switched off or in airplane mode and hence there was no way to retrieve it now. I was now on my bike, ready to go home, Devendra and Pratik told me to come early in the morning and search for the phone if I had dropped it somewhere. But I knew it was not possible, and I was also sure I never dropped it but I was not able to figure out where did it go??? Finally as I was about to leave, Pratik while keeping my phone in my bike’s front pocket told me that maybe you would have kept it here! And I was like..*&#*&$##&**#. Now I had my phone in my hand and I was like THANK GOD nothing happened to you. I realised how much I am attached to my phone and what it means to me, I can say I have NOMOPHOBIA, which is the fear of losing phone.

I also came to know that your friends will always help you but your best friends will teach you and they will tell you why they are your best friends!!! We will continue with python in next blog, till then keep your mobiles safe and keep coding…
